Day 5 – Norfolk and the Outer Banks

Day 5 – Norfolk and the Outer Banks

I was hoping that the Airbus A380 that I’d bagged on the way from Dulles to Arlington was a sign that I’d be able to put my foot down and fly down the road to the Outer Banks via Norfolk to get the kids and Mistletoe for a three-hour run home to Raleigh.

After all, it’s a Sunday morning and there shouldn’t be a whole of traffic out there until the afternoon, right?

Ah, yes.

Take it away, Marvin…

Yes, it was an *EPIC* tailback that lasted well past *RICHMOND* as in halfway to Norfolk!

Normally the tailbacks heading south on I-95 are done by the Dumfries exit with the worst one I’d encountered to that point lasting until Fredericksburg.

And I still have no clue why they were occurring…there were no wrecks anywhere along the way. At least by the time I got to Richmond and hit the I-295 bypass in the general direction of the airport, I could understand the tailbacks there with the NASCAR race going on at the time I was passing by.

Anywho, long story short (too late…sorry Marvin!), it was not the amazingly fast run to Kill Devil Hills I had imagined it’d be. I arrived in the Outer Banks just as they were heading out for a quick errand so I had plenty of time to make use of the facilities near Duck and Corolla and then do a lap round the Wright Brothers Memorial before heading to the house that Julia had hired.

That was a nice little break before getting back in the chair with a much more crowded Traverse thanks to three kids and a PuppyDoodle(tm). About three hours later on a run down US-64, I finally pulled into the driveway and the trip was done.

And I can assure you that once the kids were asleep, I wasn’t too far behind them and I’m pretty darned sure I slept very well! 🙂
