I’m still rather in shock that it looks like it’s finally going to be happening…the long dreamt of upgrade in the Internet connectivity to Google Fibre is finally happening here at the Nerdery in East Raleigh.

I’ve been waiting for about seven years from the first time I signed up for the EMAIL notification when they’d finally pushed their install out to my neighbourhood.

Seven years!

Since then, AT&T came through a couple of years ago and laid down a fibre loop and I seriously considered jumping ship from Spectrum (or Time-Warner / Road Runner as it used to be known) cable internet.

I had always had a love/hate relationship with them. The service itself was generally rock-solid but I truly hated when I’d have to ring up what they laughingly called customer service about once every year or two.

Eventually, I just got into the habit of resetting the cable modem and if that didn’t sort it, I’d know the problem was on their side of the demarc and they’d get to it when they get to it.

Every year, I’d get the lovely bill showing the price going up as their reliability would seemingly head the other direction and just seethe in rage at their insane price increase and once again try to convince myself to jump to AT&T Fibre only to not want to disrupt things too badly for the kids who were doing virtual school.

All that changed a few months ago when I finally got the EMAIL I’d been waiting ages for…Google Fibre was finally going to come trench our neighbourhood and lay their own fibre loop!

At first I have to admit I thought it a scam…been there, heard that before! There were also persistent rumours that Google Fibre was going to abandon the fibre build-out in favour of wireless connectivity and feeling the chances they’d come to the poorer sections of the Raleigh that they hadn’t already lit up would not go away.

But lo and behold, here come the trenching machines and the guys laying down their fibre loop and it looks like they’re serious about getting it lit as quickly as possible.

When the gent came round to pitch the switch to Google Fibre, he got what very few door-to-door sales people have ever managed to get: my attention and my signature on the dotted line. Of course, it helped his case tremendously that I was so over the anaemic upload speeds of Spectrum and that he’d already visited my beloved neighbours who warned him about what the first word out of his mouth *SHOULDN’T* be… 😉

Today whilst I was out and about schlepping kids, a wonderful thing occurred.

A most beautiful trenching job leading to the Google Fibre demarc installed neatly on the wall outside the garage.

It’s really going to happen! Woo hoo! 🙂
