As the “1922 Committee” of Tory backbenchers is voting on whether to execute the Prime Minister’s political death warrant for her efforts in terms of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, one wonders if she’s thinking about one Michael Collins.

The Big Fellow was tasked by Eamon de Valera to go to London to negotiate a treaty with Britain for Irish independence. What he came home with didn’t give de Valera the Republic he wanted and the northern six counties were hived off to remain part of the UK…but NO ONE could have come home with the Republic. Much like NO ONE can come home with a Brexit deal that would allow the UK all of the benefits of the EU with none of the responsibilities.

Isn’t it ironic that the partition of Ireland almost 100 years ago is STILL causing everyone such a headache today with the “backstop” option for Northern Ireland to remain in the customs union?

We shall know shortly if Mrs May is put to the sword thanks to the out-and-out civil war in the Conservative Party.

Michael Collins noted that he had signed his actual death warrant by agreeing the Treaty that partitioned Ireland when de Valera’s faction walked out of Dail Eireann and into civil war.

He was right…he was assassinated in his home County by forces opposing the Treaty in 1922.

You just can’t make this stuff up!
