Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks Metro Park

Today’s adventure starts at a beautiful park literally just down the street from the hotel…Highbanks Metro Park in north Columbus to meet up with Patrick and Suzette and the girls.

A couple of weeks prior, I was watching the live stream of Mairin and Keelia’s dance competition whilst working on five sets of tax returns in tax preparation hell. As I’m texting back and forth with Suzette, she says at one point that she wished she had my camera for Mairin’s senior pictures that she wasn’t particularly happy with.

Whilst approaching downtown Nashville near the airport, I leave her a voice mail that honestly was not my best voice mail work with the gist of the message being “were you serious about wanting me to bring my camera?” Of course, right as I hang up I realise that it kind of came of as being more than a little bit of a jerk but that’s when I hit the traffic jam south of downtown that otherwise occupies my attention.

Long story short…she was kind enough to forgive me for being a jerk in voice mail (as opposed to being one of a “Bunch of Jerks” who are generally more lovable!) and here I am at this park to see if I can do better for Mairin’s senior pictures than the photographer she had hired.

This park is a very beautiful and rustic setting that can make you forget that you’re in the big city! There is a pretty orange and tan house containing the nature centre as well as plenty of paths and bridges to play with.

But before we could get to the reason we were there…we came across a flock of wild turkeys roaming about. After getting off more than a few shots of them through the trees (including the toms fanning their tail feathers), Pat decided to let fly with his turkey call.

It was fantastically authentic…so much so that a procession of the hens made a beeline up the hill to find the source of that sound they found so delightful and irresistible!

All we needed was for someone to cue up the saxophone music because you know when you start hearing the sax on the soundtrack, you know what’s coming next! 😉

If you get a chance, do visit this park and bring your camera with you! I promise you will not be disappointed… 🙂
