Every now and then, Nicholas had asked me to run the music (and/or help with the scoreboard and statistics) for his beer hockey league but it looks like I might well be doing it far more consistently now!
I connect the iPad to a massive Bluetooth speaker stationed across the rink near the locker rooms and provide the music between plays as well as some extended sets before the games, during the Zamboni in the intermission, and often afterwards spinning some of our favourite tunes until it’s time for the speaker to make it’s way back to the cupboard.
I found DJAY by Algoriddim to be my favourite of the DJ apps for the iPad…the limited version is free (with minimal nagging usually right at the time I’m loading a new track to play straightaway) but does what I need it to which is play tracks from the playlists stored locally on the iPad and I’ll have two tracks cued at any given time ready to play when needed.
I’ve noticed that sometimes the iPad has a rather subversive sense of humour when certain tracks come up in the playlist order at a particularly opportune time… 🙂
The many nerds I’ve shared offices or dorm rooms with won’t be surprised at my love for music and ability to play a few instruments but I’m pretty sure none of them would have ever imagined me spinning tunes on anything other than my headphones or WFOX in the vehicle du jour.
If I’m honest about it, I’m just as surprised as they’ll be. But the first few times I stood in to help run the music and the generally positive reviews from the players in the car park afterward helped ensure that I was hooked pretty much immediately and would actually look forward to my next time in the scorer’s booth with the iPad and a playlist I wasn’t afraid to use! 🙂
