Sometimes finding the theme for the playlists of is dead simple and occurs within a few seconds of perusing the results of a Google search.
This was not one of them.
I really had to dig and dig for about a hour or two before I finally hit on paydirt when it came to the theme of the night from a rather unlikely source: the 46th anniversary of the broadcast of the 22nd Grammy Awards.
Oh, boy!
When I saw who headlined the winners of those golden grammophone trophies…I knew I had my theme and it came together quite quickly with a bit of revenge for a certain someone not suffering through the implementation of his infamous Mariah Carey prank in December as inspiration.
It’s been made abundantly clear through the past few months of this DJ gig which artists earns the scorn of that certain someone and close to if not at the top of that list is one Michael McDonald.
So when I saw that “What A Fool Believes” by Kenny Loggins and that very same maligned Michael McDonald won “Song of the Year”, I knew that I’d hit the jackpot and pulling together the first game’s playlist came together in no time.
Of course I was going to lead off with the Doobie Brothers cover of that song and the Doobies at that time had totally revamped their sound thanks to their relatively new lead singer…Michael McDonald!
Billy Joel’s “52nd Street” winning “Album of the Year” is why the second game’s playlist is all his. And yes, I know none of the tracks actually came from “52nd Street” though I did seriously consider “Stiletto” and “Big Shot” to continue with the revenge subplot, the tracks I chose are a bit more suited for the warm-ups.

There was a rather amusing little interlude during one of the stoppages in play when I’ll be usually be working my way through the official Ironclad playlist but given the game time was decidedly earlier than the usual late night starts and the audience skewed way younger (and more numerous!) than usual…I was actually using one of the playlists with my favourite set of random tracks which includes “I Want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow.
So I’m thinking nothing of it when I hit the play button for that track during a stoppage for icing and I’m already switching the other deck to the next song in the list when all of a sudden a couple of Kit Kat candy bars land on the scorer’s table between me and the iPad.
After successfully restarting my heart from the unexpected shock, I looked over at Miss Kristina who was sporting a lovely if not awfully cute grin.
I must have had a look on my face that ranged somewhere between confused and willful stupidity because she actually had to point out what was currently playing and then hope in vain I’d actually catch the clue on my own.
Which I did which was about two seconds after she started explaining what she was thinking…
I’m sure I must have been blushing seriously hard as she starts laughing at how badly she caught me out…at least that’s how I I think I remember it because I was laughing my ass off at my own obliviousness! 😉
