For many people, having a really famous person liking your name so much that they want to use it as the title for a residency in Las Vegas would be a mind-blowing experience.
Or so you might have thought when Celine Dion choose to name her shows “Muse” which irritated the band of the same name so much that the band Muse threatened to sue her for trademark infringement.
Matthew Bellamy was rather blunt as to the reason why…”we don’t want to turn up there with people thinking we’re Celine Dion’s backing band”.
Ouch!
Apparently $50,000 wasn’t enough to get the band to change their minds so Celine ended up calling her 2003 residency “A New Day…” instead. She didn’t seem to do so badly under her second choice moniker with a record $385M gross over four years when she left for a world tour in 2008. 🙂
I’ll confess that there was another reason I picked this theme after I looked at the lineup sheets for the teams playing in tonight’s game and noticed that there was a certain player who is beloved by my usual partner in the booth who actually suggested that I listen to Muse and largely picked the tracks the first time I used them as a theme.
I figured she wouldn’t mind a healthy extended set of “Not Celine’s Backing Band” and that plan would have worked a treat but there was only one problem…her beau was a scratch and they didn’t make the trip to the Factory. Bummer. 🙁
