Here’s where you’ll find what’s for dinner and why it’s probably more awesome than what you’re having!
What do you get when you combine sazón, hot Hungarian paprika, and adobo with caramelised onions and browned ground beef? Tacos that absolutely blew our minds so much that we may never go back to the traditional seasoning... ;)
Miguel's aunt has come to North Carolina to visit which is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Szent István Nap (St Stephen's Day) a week early with some Hungarian comfort foods! :)
There's about as many variations on the Minnesota hot dish as there are lakes in the state. This more Minnesotan variation on American Chop Suey is certainly one of my favourites even if it doesn't have tater tots or Lutheran Binding! :)
Brak likes pork. So does pretty much everyone who is willing to do all of five minutes of carving up a boneless pork loin to get two pork roasts and quite a few pork chops for far cheaper than letting the grocer ream you for doing the exact thing! :)
There's nothing like a wonderful turkey feast to share on Thanksgiving Day. For my first two years living in Florida, Thanksgiving involved the "Drive of Shame" to Publix to save the day...
Thanksgiving comes a day early thanks to Mom and Meghann being at a bit of loose ends and a turkey that's just begging to be the guest of honour at dinner... :)
If you've done some töltött káposzta (Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage), you may as well use the rest of the cabbage for this exceptionally cheap but very tasty companion meal! :)
We occasionally take requests for dinner and Nicholas had a real winner of a suggestion… töltött káposzta (Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage). It may not be the most pretty dish but be our guest with this staple of Magyar comfort food!
Sometimes you've got to have some Jersey Mike's and for me it's going to be the hoagie secret menu item...the #12 Cancro Special! :)
Lord knows we've had a couple of them through the last few hundred years here in the Great State of North Cackalacky known to everyone else as North Carolina. To be sure, there was this rather unpleasant business a little over 160 years ago we were dragged into rather unwillingly being trapped between a rival capital placed in the commonwealth north of us and some rather radical firebrands to our south who ultimately lit the…
Today's fun activity was to finally get off my duff and try my hand at a dish I'd never attempted without Aunt Judy being right there in her kitchen...her potato salad. This concoction of hers was pretty much universally well-received, so much so that even Uncle Walter's family in south Georgia would insist she make it whenever they'd head south for a family reunion. When *SOUTHERNERS* who know something about potato salad won't touch anything…
It's been a very long time since I dusted off a particular recipe that comes to me from my Aunt Judy...her lemon velvet cake. I honestly can't remember the last time I'd made it but it's easily got to be 15 years or more. It's not that I don't like this cake...it's easily my favourite by far. And it's not particularly hard to make once you get past making some rookie mistakes on the first…
Tacos. On an actual Tuesday. :) (Well for me and two of the three kids…Mr Ketogenic thoroughly enjoyed his diet-friendly pork chop dinner!)
Boldog Szent István napját! Yesterday was St Stephen’s feast day which is a national Hungarian holiday (also known as Constitution Day or New Bread Day). I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to see my mother and sister and make for them kapuszta e teszta (cabbage and noodles) with kielbasa! :) Jó etvagyát! :)
Nicholas had a request for his 17th birthday…bolgrács gulyás (literally “kettle goulash” in Magyar/Hungarian) owing to it originally being cooked in a cauldron over an open flame. I’d never made it before so I was a little bit nervous about how it would turn out. I’d needn’t have worried…the gulyás with spaetzle had rave reviews not only from Nick and Katie but my neighbours (who just found out there is a baby grandson due in…
I’ve been wanting to experiment with doing a pasta dish ‘aglio e olio’ (literally garlic and oil) and after seeing a picture of it and a video of possibly one of the most beautiful villages I can imagine from the island of Sardinia, it was time to finally give that inspiration a shot. I think I’ll be doing it again…very tasty!
Just one more hour until the cabbage goes in…love Irish cooking, hate having to practise Irish patience… :)
Over the years, I've been learning a bit here and there about Puerto Rican culture from my wonderful neighbours Miguel and Jessica. A couple of days ago, a small tub of homemade sofrito came my way and last night it came together with some Polska kielbasa and olive oil. Wow. Seriously…WOW! Combined with a bit of "káposzta és tészta" (cabbage and noodles) which was done with the hot Hungarian paprika…dinner was not for the faint…
When she came visiting on Tuesday, she came bearing this dish with the Minnesotan hot dish her grandmother made legendary. The last time I had it was over 15 years ago when she was still with us. Aunt Judy…this stray of yours still misses you terribly! But you trained Meghann well… :)
This was a lovely surprise gift of paprikás csirke (chicken paprikás) this evening...jó étvágyat! :)
Slainte! And so it begins… :) Erin go bragh! UPDATE: On the plate and in the mouth was quite another experience. My oldest son rated it 20 on a scale of 10…
This is a holiday I can certainly support wholeheartedly and thanks to agreeable pricing on green peppers…it was definitely time to get my Magyar on! So the headliners are töltött paprika (stuffed peppers and my personal favourite) and töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage). And when I'm done stuffing peppers and cabbage, then it's time to do some egg noodles and shred the remaining cabbage for káposzta és tészta which works well with kielbasa. Putting them together…
