From the “Targeted Ship, Sank Truck” Dept:

I came across some interesting bit of local news this morning prior to making the usual journey to collect Katie, Alex, and Mistletoe for today’s bit of virtual schooling at the house.

It seems that someone fell asleep at the wheel round 0420 and ended up torpedoing the Burger King that I tend to visit every now and then with a direct hit amidships.

Fortunately, the driver will apparently be OK but to give you an idea of just how impressive a feat this was…do consider that in order to penetrate the Burger King’s west-facing side as far as that SUV did (almost to the far wall/drive-through window), he had to have been giving that vehicle’s engine the full beans.

And then there was the small matter of flying through the intersection between the BK and the McDonald’s on Poole Road, flying over a kerb and a small 2m descent down a small embankment into the car park and then the kerb near the door and finally into the side of the restaurant itself. That would be an impressive feat for someone who was awake…for someone who was asleep to manage to do all that and not kill someone in the process says there were some angels along for that harrowing ride.

I truly feel for the operator of this particular store…they had literally just finished the complete renovation of this location only a couple days prior to the torpedo attack from Captain Kamikaze! I’m sure their insurance is up to snuff but I can only imagine just how miserable that must have been for them when the breaking news flashed on the screen showing their Burger King had just gotten sunk!

There were a few commenters on the story bemoaning the fact that RPD apparently isn’t planning on charging the driver and I can certainly understand their point of view but do consider that the driver has injuries, medical bills, and a trashed SUV that insurance isn’t likely to fully cover a replacement in a write-off…and you can expect that the insurance company will certainly punish them for the next three years with dramatically higher rates.

For an incident where no one got killed and a restaurant that can once again be rebuilt, that would seem to be punitive enough to me.
