Every now and then, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will saturate a certain section of the motorways for targeted enforcement and clearly the bit of the westbound I-40 motorway between the junction at Exit 301 and Hammond Road at Exit 299 that we were going to use, we saw three SHP troopers with the pull-over party lights activated.
It’s a tactic referred to as “wolf-packing” and not just because of Raleigh’s largest university’s mascot!
Their prey would include the poor bugger that was right behind me just before the Hammond Road exit ramp who got nicked by Evel Knievel with the other two purveyors of the pull over party lights being a unmarked sports car and the customary silver coloured Charger they’ve favoured in recent years.
Not that it would have helped him had he made the exit because the Wake County Sheriff’s had deployed their red unmarked sports car unit who had nicked someone on Hammond heading toward I-40 and downtown Raleigh.
Phil Collins and Genesis was the playlist currently serenading us from WFOX and Alex decides to go for “That’s All” from the self-titled Genesis album on the WFOX request line. OK, he turned to his left and asked me to play that track…
I figured there was an even better one to choose from Genesis’ “Duke” album with the bits in [BOLD-ITALIC] being my ad-libs… 🙂
There must be some misunderstanding [“Officer”]
There must be some kind of mistake [“I’m so sorry”]
I waited in the rain for hours
You were late [“And so was I!”]
Now it’s not like me to say the right thing [“So I’m going to remain silent…”]
But you could’ve called to let me know
I checked your number twice, don’t understand it [“What was your badge number again?”]
So I went home [“Oh no, fleeing and eluding!”]
Well I’d been waiting for this weekend [“I’d like to start it now, in fact”]
I thought that maybe we could see a show [“But not in the jail common room”]
Never dreamed I’d have this feeling [“That I’m hoping for just a ticket”]
But seeing you is believing [“With all those papers in your hand”]
That’s why I don’t know why
You didn’t show up that night
That was the point where Alex and I are completely losing it just as we were passing the fourth stopped car on our way to the Rush Street stoplight (which is not too far from the two jails astride Hammond Road a bit further down the road toward Garner).
Thank good laughing like maniacs is not a traffic offence or we’d be guilty as sin and ready to be banged off to chokey! 🙂
