Even if you’re not much into the Olympics with all of the professional athletes competing in what was once an all-amateur competition (which we pretended was true even when the Communist nations were sending teams full of paid athletes during the Cold War), it’s hard not to find the US Women’s Hockey Team’s 2-1 overtime win over arch-nemeis Canada as inspiring as it was thrilling.
(Future me: the men’s final would also be decided by that same score in overtime three days after the women won gold for the first US sweep of the Olympic gold medals in ice hockey ironically on the 46th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” semi-final game at Lake Placid in 1980. This year’s gold medal for the men was the first since that miraculous run in 1980.)
So who could resist stacking the first game’s playlist with some tracks from “The Cutting Edge” where an injured hockey player teams up with a mercurial figure skater who can’t keep a partner to win gold in pairs figure skating in Albertville, France! 🙂
