Tonight’s theme starts out with a rather surprising factoid about the track leading off the first set.

This lovely little duet with Kiki Dee was Sir Elton John’s first single to top the UK chart on this date in 1976!

I’d have imagined with the lovely tunes he’d been singing up to that point that he’d have topped the charts in Old Blighty but apparently the mood of the listening public was lukewarm toward this track until by sheer force of will it eventually topped the chart.

I don’t know what took the Brits so long…I loved this track the first time I heard it!

But then we’re talking about the same people who named an ice-breaker ship “Boaty McBoatface” and currently have a gent standing in a by-election for Nigel Farage’s vacated Essex seat of Clacton-by-Sea (look directly south of Ipswich at the eastern edge of the peninsula) that goes by the name Count Binface who styles himself as an alien from Sirius IX and wears a rubbish bin on top of his suit of armour…and just might actually get elected to the House of Commons! 😉

Yep…Sir Elton’s first UK chart topper is 50 years old today which may come as a shock to those listeners who first heard it as the finale number in “Ella Enchanted” (like my younger son acting as my co-pilot and occasional musical consultant!) but it’s almost as old as I am! 🙂

I’d imagine there were more than a few concert goers to the Guns N’ Roses show at Carter-Finley Stadium that didn’t get enough GnR or are potentially still hung-over.

Either way, we’re hitting some of the B-side tracks we didn’t get to on Tuesday… 🙂
