It’s very rare that I reuse a night’s theme but the set that was inspired by the news of Dolly Parton’s passing prior to the Helios division games on Tuesday is one I really wanted to share with the Bendis division teams.
Dolly’s impact as an artist and a philanthropist and all-round special human being was so profound that she certainly rates being honoured for the entire week.
What we didn’t know on Tuesday was that the actor Tim Curry also passed away at the age of 80 on the same day as Dolly but the news was intentionally embargoed to not take the spotlight away from Dolly’s accomplishments.
He had such an amazing range as an actor whether it was as the nosey and creepy concierge in Home Alone 2: Alone in New York or a Russian Navy doctor in The Hunt for Red October but he really showed just how talented he was in arguably his most famous role as Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is still a staple of midnight showings at the cinemas often with audience members in costume quoting the movie during the actual showing complete with props.
For most of us growing up, a trip to The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a rite of passage and that’s why The Rocky Horror Picture Show holds the record for the longest cintinuous theatrical run in the cinemas at 51 years and counting!
That’s why we’re doing something a bit different during tonight’s show where we will run Dolly’s set during the Zamboni as we did on Tuesday but the stoppages and period breaks are going to all be from the soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and we’ll finish up the paperwork to an extended cut of The Time Warp.
And it would have been exactly so until Crusie scored a goal and the tradition is that when scores a goal, he gets his hit of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” which was played during one of the period breaks. 🙂
