It may not seem so to the casual listener but it’s very rare that the set list of the tunes is chosen in advance.
Oh, I have an idea of what tracks I want to play for the theme and generally what order I want to play them for maximum effect (whenever possible, the louder and more dynamic tunes are saved up for when the players are on the ice warming up) but the set list is generally not written down anywhere and it’s subject to change at a moment’s notice.
In a manner of confession, I had the title to this post all ready to go when I created the placeholder entry and certainly had every intention of playing the Ghostbusters theme during the Zamboni but wouldn’t you know it…that famous Ray Parker Jr tune didn’t actually make it into the main set (though it did get played during one of the period intermissions).
I wish I could say that it was intentional but with 140 tracks in that playlist and the embarrassment of riches in it to choose from, the truth is that I just plain forgot about it until it was too late and we were into the game.
No one seemed particularly put out by that track ending up during the one minute break between periods. 🙂
That spontaneity is one of the things that makes rocking the speakers so much fun and the shameless abuse of my “authority” to stay exclusively in the Ben’s Day playlist for every stoppage as well is the cherry on the top! 🙂

Zamboni and Game 2 Warm-Ups
There was one track that absolutely was going to happen and thanks to one of our referees (Dean Kolbe) specifically requesting it, it ended up in the warm-ups for game 2 which was actually a better fit than where it was originally likely to have been played before game 1.
I love it when a plan comes together and whilst this tweak certainly wasn’t planned, it really did help the second set be a fair bit stronger when all was said and done. 🙂

In this case, his subversion of the night’s theme was a couple of minutes later and played in it’s full glory when doing the end-of-game paperwork…and that smile on his face as he was leaving the ice seemed to indicate he was perfectly fine with it! 🙂
