One of North Carolina’s favourite musical sons (though he was actually born in Boston) has a rather amusing take on the song that prompted tonight’s theme.

Way back when, he was gifted “You’ve Got a Friend” by his long-time collaborator Carole King (from her “Tapestry” album) and right away he figured it was “probably the best pop song ever written”.

His cover of that song featuring Joni Mitchell on backing vocals on his “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon” album would top the Billboard Hot 100 chart on this date in 1971.

It would then go on to win Grammys for both JT (Best Male Vocal Performance) and Carole (Song of the Year) and be covered many times since then.

When JT and Carole King recreated the concerts they’d performed at The Troubadour in the early 1970s, he shared that he “had no idea that he’d be singing that song every night for the rest of his life” but that it was a good song to be known for and that he’d traveled throughout the world with it and that he thanked Carole for it often (and indeed once again during that performance).

He’s still touring today and that song is always in the set…not bad for a 55 year-old song that is still one of the most amazing tracks I’ve ever heard! 🙂

Game 1 Warm-Ups

Sadly, most of the pre-game set I had planned which would have led off with the songs that ended up getting punted to the break between games went straight into the bin due to technical difficulties that ultimately turned out to be a bad wire near the control centre for the rink audio.

But at least you can see what two songs I was using to send signal to the mixer and the sound eventually came back about halfway through “Jam On It”… 🙂

Zamboni and Game 2 Warm-Ups

To the fans who might have been listening to the Forest rink during the intermission on Live Barn, I do apologise but when James Taylor is playing, I’m going to be singing along because how can you not have your own duet with JT?

Given the dreadful weather outside and the theme of the night, the “finish up the paperwork” song was a total no-brainer! 🙂
