From the “Dealing With a Coal Mining Company in Chapter 11 Is Such a Joy” Dept:

Especially when they owe you money because between the time they cut a check for the delay rental on the coal leases I inherited and the time I actually tried to deposit the check…the mining company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection!

Part of this is my fault for sitting on the rent checks for about five weeks because my credit union isn’t particularly convenient to where I live and I just discovered mobile check depositing (which is way cool when it works).

But suffice it to say that a giant squirrel on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” gave me plenty of motivation to try to deposit the checks and of course they bounced thanks to the corporation closing their account in favour of a debtor in possession account.

And that’s why I ended up creating a 35 page PDF document called “Proof of Claim Form 410” to submit to the bankruptcy court this morning instead of doing something a bit more interesting such as contemplating my navel.

Bankruptcy sucks…but being lumped into an unsecured creditor pool sucks even more!

Moral of the story: don’t wait for Mr Nutterbutter to turn up to get that check cashed when dealing with an unstable coal company! 🙁
