The very nasty weather predicted for today got to be a bit more exciting than we planned when the phone started going nuts with the raucous emergency alert sound indicating that a tornado warning had been issued for our area.

One of the nice things about no longer using the satellite dish is that the signal is no longer susceptible to rain fade so over to WRAL we go to see Mike Maze doing the Weather Dance of Preempted Programming and immediately it’s clear that this is kind of a big deal.

It’s never good when he’s showing the wind shear product with this garish red blob right next to an equally garish green blob showing the centre of rotation…and then he mentions the main street outside your neighbourhood as directly in line with the projected track of the tornado.

That’s when I’m yelling for Nicholas to get downstairs and get ready to duck into the cupboard under the stairs.

The tornado touched down briefly near Garner High School about 10 miles SW of here and by the time the centre of rotation was passing east of us, it was already back up in the clouds and rain wrapped so all you could see was a slightly darker area of the passing storm clouds.

And now…back to your regularly scheduled programming! 🙂

Confirmed EF-1 which is pretty impressive for this time of year!
