Forty nine years and three days ago, Lynyrd Skynyrd released the “Street Survivors” album to the world.

No one would have imagined that on this date in 1977, three members of the band would be dead and many of the others critically injured when their plane crashed near the Mississippi-Louisiana border as the band was on their way to a concert in Baton Rouge.

There is no way you can understate the shock of the musical world at the loss of Ronnie van Zant and Steve and Claire Gaines.

It would take ten years for the surviving band members to come back together as Lynyrd Skynyrd but they were never truly the same.

I had a few more tracks of theirs to play but in the spirit of things going awfully wrong, I’d kick off “Free Bird’ only to hear the sound drop out completely even though the mixer was receiving full signal. Unfortunately the main mixer between the rinks had been set so that what I was playing was heard on both rinks until the mixer configuration could be sorted.

But eventually it was and as they say, the show must go on.
