When Vladimir Putin’s illegal and abhorrent invasion of sovereign Ukraine started several days ago, it looked very much like David v Goliath part deux with David not getting a whole lot of love from the bookmakers.
After all, the massive imbalance between the number of troops and material was such that anyone laying odds on the conflict lasting a week before Putin could install his puppet government in Kyiv would have to seriously juice the odds to get anyone to lay money down on Ukraine’s side of the ledger.
And yet here we are watching the advance of the main lines getting bogged down in the face of determined and dogged resistance from the Ukrainians who are clearly not going to roll over and just let a spoilt child in Moscow have his way.
From the defenders of an island in the Black Sea telling a Russian warship what to go do with itself to President Zelensky refusing offers of safe passage and telling the world “I don’t need a ride, I need ammo” when he’s fighting on the front lines of his soldiers…Ukraine has shown a resolve and backbone that Moscow is not at all used to seeing from their former satellite states.
Vladimir Putin has got to be utterly beside himself in frustration and anger that his blitzkrieg has turned into a persistent wall of resistance that refuses to back down in even the smallest way.
And then there’s the viral clip of a Ukrainian woman who quite possibly has the biggest set of cojones of anyone in Ukraine when she confronts a heavily armed and armoured soldier and utterly destroys him with scornful words and sunflower seeds.
I don’t know how old she is and if she’d remember the bad old days before cell phone videos where she’d likely have been shot where she stood for daring to confront a Russian soldier and say those sorts of things.
Then again, I don’t think she really cares even if she is old enough to remember.
It was clear that soldier wanted to be anywhere but in front of her likely getting the most vicious tongue-lashing he’s ever had. Perhaps he and his colleagues might have thought of that before following illegal orders to invade a sovereign country!
So I got to thinking that as it appears that the Major League Baseball season is likely to not get going on time and they’re massive consumers of sunflower seeds, perhaps their official supplier might consider donating a few plane loads of tubs of sunflower seeds to Ukraine as weapons the Russians clearly have no defence against?
